Kids helping Kids!!!

Our photography students of Kids' Pics took wonderful photographs for creating custom Christmas
Cards to raise funds to help build a school house in Nepal!! They raised $260! All profits from the sale
of these cards were donated to the non-profit 501(c)(3) organization, Room to Read. Thank you for
supporting their cause!
Have you ever thought of looking into a child's world through
photographs? Photographs are rich sources to explore the world
around children and good news is, they are capable of taking
great photographs!!!  Innocent eyes capture peaceful moments
and funny candid shots. Every child is born as a gifted artist. They
just need the opportunity to learn.

Photography is an interdisciplinary subject to enhance learning in
literacy and science. Through the viewfinder, children learn to
see the world differently. Photography lets children discover and
learn about the world around them...and it's a lot of fun! Some
children said they feel more independent when they were taking
pictures on their own. Some children said taking pictures helps to
show their feelings more easily. Taking photographs can be used
to bring out a child's creativity as well as help their speaking and
writing skills as they explain their photographs to their audiences.
It is a great communication tool.
Kids' Pics Photography Program : Spring 2008

Beyond Borders Images voluntarily teaches photography to
children at Maili
Land in Waianae, Oahu, ages from 5 to 11 every
Sunday. They learn basic operations of a digital camera (flash,
zoom, continuous, self-timer, macro etc.) along with other art
projects while learning art elements and principles (lines, patterns,
texture, emphasis etc.). They also learn about their culture and
environment through various fun activities. Most importantly,
through many field trips, children explore the world around them by
taking photographs. Each week, the kids write in their journal
about the pictures they have taken, and in addition to this, the
older kids are expected to read books to spur their imagination.

CHILDREN COMMUNICATING
VISUALLY THROUGH PHOTOGRAPHS

ABSTRACT
Photographs provide visual
representations without requiring
structured syntactic language skills.
They facilitate another means of
communication in addition to the
traditional oral and written
communication approaches, especially
for children in the process of cognitive
development. As the photography field
has matured, it is worthwhile to explore
their potential as a communication tool;
in terms of how children communicate
visually through photographs.
They will be celebrating their first photo exhibition May 2nd, 2008
during the Honolulu First Friday Gallery Walk from 6pm -9pm at the
Chinatown Courtyard (1126 Smith St., Honolulu, 96817).  They will
be selling their photographs, and greeting cards made with their art
work. All proceeds from the sales of their photographs will be
donated to the Lei Fund. To purchase them on line, please visit
